Concept
These renderings were a part of a rudementary production design assignment. The first costume designs expected for the Production Design major at Savannah College of Art and Design. I was required to design two opposite characters in clothing of the Romantic Era (1825-1835). I chose to put Lady Capulet into dark, purple clothing to give her the image of power. She is well-to-do so the dress is extravogant, complete with the enormous mutton-chop sleeves that were popular in the time.
Mercutio I put in a British officer's uniform. The other boys in the play look up to Mercutio as he has significantly more life experience. He is also mildly insane, as made evident by his ramblings (particularly the Queen Mab speech). I attributed this to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and decided to give him a military history to explain some of his excentricity as well as give the younger characters of both families a reason to look up to him.
